Can’t hardly wait to converge at ConvergeSC

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I’m stoked about the first-ever ConvergeSC conference tomorrow in Columbia, S.C. It’ll be a mix of web development, design, marketing and sales folks – and an arsenal of awesome speakers, including Robert Prioleau of Blue Ion and Geno Church of Brains on Fire. I’ve had the honor of working on one of Blue Ion’s creative teams in past, and wow, these guys don’t make web sites – they make web experiences.

It will also be great to reconnect with friends and colleagues. Sitting in Amoco Hall on the USC campus, it’ll be like the class we never took together in college.

And, who’d ever turn down a conference where you don’t have to wear a power suit? I’m so there.

Lunchbox Episode 2: What the heck is the semantic web?

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Today’s Menu: Orange Coat, a gourmet web design company.

Recently I had the pleasure of lunching with Evan Tishuk and Jim Ciallella of Orange Coat and learning about the semantic web: the idea that the web itself can become a database – and meaning that is embedded in the data can make it easier for both humans and computers to understand, transmit, store and relate.

For those of you who’ve never even thought about this before, there are tools we use right now that are considered steps toward developing a more semantic web. If your head doesn’t explode from this mind-blowing podcast, feel free to watch this video and read Jim’s blog post.

And we’re live.

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

You know its going to be a fun week when your alarm clock says, “G’morning! Your web site launches today.” I’ve overseen many a site launch. Part of you is freaking out; another part is relieved. You want everything to be perfect, functioning.

But, today is calm, collected and chill. Our site is live. We’ll find some typos. You’ll find some, too. We’ll fix them. All in a day’s work.

  • Peace at this bustling time of year.

    December 22, 2009

Thank you to Gil Gerretsen for sharing “Desiderata,” by Max Ehrmann via email earlier this week:

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,

    they too have [...]

  • Ok with not knowing everything.

    December 15, 2009

Life has been good at Big Gnome. Silent on the blog, a little more vocal on the Twitters, but we’ve been heads down working on some really cool work, including a rebranding for an IT security firm.
To take a moment from the grind, I started Monday off in more relaxed fashion: I met Cass Tyson, [...]
